You Know Who.. Is Trying a New Set-Up

Image
And Brett is back! Not only that, I think we might have even come up with a rig that works. You know, one thing that I love about Brett is that he is not afraid to be completely random. The Mel Tormé cut for instance: Why did we play it? I don’t remember. Did we need to hear it? Not sure. We also paid tribute to Rick Derringer, who passed away yesterday at the age of 77. (To be honest, however, he dropped off my radar somewhere between the first and second WWF Wrestling albums.)   Click here to check it out: 5/27/2025   Oscar Peterson NHØP for short “Nigerian Marketplace” (Oscar Peterson) From Nigerian Marketplace   (Pablo, 1982)   Played in celebration of the legendary bassist, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, born on this day in 1946.     Ween “The Fucked Jam” (Ween) From Quebec   (Sanctuary, 2003)     Pink Floyd “Bike” (Syd Barrett) From The Piper at the Gates of Dawn   (EMI Columbia, 1967)     Mel Tormé "Sunshine Superman" (D...

You Know Who... Bids Farewell to George Wendt

Image
George Wendt  1948–2025 Found out towards the end of the show that George Wendt (you know, Norm) passed away. I tried to sneak in the theme song to Cheers, but the first one that came up in my search was some cheap cover version and I canned that immediately. So much for my impromptu tribute. Played some interesting rarities by the likes of Bill Nelson (formerly of Be Bop Deluxe) and The New Barbarians, and gave some love to Joe Cocker, whose birthday it was today. It was Jane Weidlin’s birthday today too. I should have played some Go-Go’s. Oh well. I can’t think of everything.   Click here to check it out: LIC Radio 5/20/2025     Oregon “June Bug” (Ralph Towner) Israel Festival. You Know Who... Has a New Time Slot

Image
First show in the new time slot. It was a little disorienting. As I scored tickets for The Who’s farewell tour (I think they really mean it this time) this morning, I was on a bit of a kick, and that dominated the first part of the show. Aside from that some real stand-out live tracks by Fleetwood Mac, Faces, Stevie Wonder, and Patti Smith. Plenty of good stuff.   Click here to check it out: LIC Radio 5/13/2025     Weather Report “Fast City” (Joe Zawinul) Sartory Saal, Köln, DE, 3/13/83 Studio version released on Night Passage   (ARC/Columbia ,1980)     The Who “The Song Is Over” (Pete Townshend) Rough mix Official version released on Who’s Next   (Track/Decca, 1971)     The Who “Dogs” (Pete Townhend) Single A-side (Track, 1968)     The Who “Substitute” (Pete Townshend) Single A-side (Reaction/Atco, 1966)     Graham Bond Organisation Not The Who, but somehow The Who? “Waltz for a Pig” (Ginger Baker) B-Side of “Substitute” ...

You Know Who... Sends This One Out to Joe

Image
Me and Joe, August 2010 I was two days into preparing for this week’s show before I was told that it was going to have to be bumped up a day. However, that wasn’t the most disruptive news I got this week. I found out on Sunday that my friend Joe Karoly, artist, musician, and LIC denizen, passed away last week. I was thrown for a loop, to say the least. In his memory I played a song by his old band, House of Commons. I wish I remembered half off the stories he’s told me over the years. I will miss him terribly. As for the rest? I feel embarrassed to say that it might be true that I have not played any hip-hop on this show in the last seven years (I’ll have to look over the show log). And if that it true, I’m sadly ashamed to say that the first instance is a bunch of white dudes (i.e. Beastie Boys). Hey, at least it’s not Vanilla Ice. Today was the birthday of Mic Gillette, trumpeter with Tower of Power. As they are (pardon my vulgarity) fucking awesome, it seemed only logical to devote ...

You Know Who... Is Trying to Avoid Repetition

Image
Oscar Peterson Given that I am locked in the cycle of doing shows on the same date as two years ago, I am trying to avoid playing the same things I did then (in terms of birthday people and recordings from this day). Perhaps I should congratulate myself on playing only two songs that I have played before. Also, maybe I should talk to my therapist about the obsessive-compulsive tendency that make me feel like it really matters. In any event, today was chock full of good tunes. The standouts for me were the Les Dudek songs that I had never heard before.   Click here to check it out: LIC Radio 5/1/2025     Oscar Peterson Trio “Cubano Chant” (Ray Bryant) NDR Funkhaus, Hannover, DE, 5/1/65 Studio version released on Swinging Brass with the Oscar Peterson Trio   (Verve, 1960)     Steve Hillage "Electrick Gypsies" (Steve Hillage) From L   (Virgin/Atlantic, 1976     Kaleidoscope “Lie to Me” David Lindley, Stuart Brotman, Solomon Feldthouse, Chester C...
