You Know Who... Catches a Wave

Brian Wilson
1942-2025
When Sly Stone passed away before last week’s show, I wasn’t really prepared. I mean, I was somewhat prepared for the eventuality of it. I knew he wasn’t well. Also, I had just watched Questlove’s excellent documentary, which a gorgeous encapsulation of the man and his work, and I got a feeling from it that was almost valedictory. The timing, however, was such that I didn’t have a lot of time to prepare a proper tribute, showcasing his genius while eschewing the most popular recordings. (Maybe I need to self-reflect and figure out why I have this hipster-ish need for all things obscure.)

Brian Wilson, of course, passed on the day after last week’s show. I had a good amount of time to ruminate on the songs that grabbed me and meant the most to me. I eschewed outtakes and live cuts because I didn’t think that they illustrated what made Brian Wilson such an important figure in music and in my life. However, I still stuck with deeper cuts, which maybe I didn’t have to do. Frankly I could have played much more, but hopefully what I did play would inspire the neophyte to explore his catalog, and make the nay-sayer reconsider previously held opinions.
