You Know Who... Wears Flowers in His Hair

Tower of Power, 1973
Another last minute change of schedule, another last minute show. No matter. No deliberate throughline today, but by happenstance, there ended up being a nice survey of the diverse sounds of the late 60’s/early 70s San Francisco Bay Area scene with some classics, some deep cuts and straight-up weirdo stuff in the mix. Speaking of oddball stuff, Bette Midler covering Peter Gabriel was a bit of a surprise. Finally, to end things up, some birthday love for jazz drummer Bob Moses led to inclusion of some tunes with one my favorite guitar players, Larry Coryell. Good times.

*Elvis had no hand in writing this (or pretty much any) song. Colonel Tom Parker, Elvis’ manager, frequently brokered deals with songwriters in which, in return for recording their songs, Elvis’ name would be added as a co-writer in order to split the royalties. Songwriters would often acquiesce, knowing that if the song were recorded by another artist, it would sell a fraction of the amount of copies. Not all songwriters went for the arrangement, however. Elvis wanted to record “I Will Always Love You,” but Parker put the kibosh on it after Dolly Parton refused to sign over half her publishing.
