Frank Zappa Photo by Philip Gould Short, but sweet.  There was a goodly amount of social criticism in today’s songs. However, that was completely by accident. Zappa took up about a quarter of the playlist, but again, this was purely by happenstance. Norm McDonald Photo by Margaret Norton As usual, as much time as I had to plan the show today, I found ways to make things more difficult and time consuming for myself. I left certain things until the last minute, couldn’t find recordings that I was absolutely certain that I had, and got ideas at the last possible minute for songs and segments that, for some reason, simply could not wait until another week. Could I have simply done a shorter show and finished at a reasonable time? Sure. Could I also keep frantically adding things until I end up starting the show almost an hour and a half late, knowing that I won’t even be half-way through the show before people are done with dinner and passed out on the couch? Yeah, that’s definitely more my style.   Their loss, though. I know I say this a lot, and occasionally almost mean it, but today was a killer show. Serendipitously finding an old Motown sampler disc at about the same time rewatching Norm McDonald’s old bit about Germany wagin...

Jim and Tammy... You Gotta Go In case anyone was wondering, the appointment with my surgeon went well today. He was pleased with how my x-rays looked and he thought the incision was healing nicely. Thanks for your concern.   So, today was either Indigenous Peoples’ Day or Columbus Day depending on your political affiliation. I’m sure that will also have an impact on whether the news Jim Bakker’s death elicited a tear or a belly laugh. Strange times in a divided country.   Consequently, we got the show started today with songs about colonialism, genocide, bigotry, murder, social apathy, and religious hypocrisy. You know, fun stuff.   Fear not, we there’s some good, rousing tunes in the middle. Also, for your edification, the show ends with a nice showcasing of the talents of jazz/R&B drummer Paul Humphrey, who was born on this day in 1935. A man of considerable and broad talents, off the top of my head, I think he is one of only a few drummers to play both Fran...

So we are officially in “Sober ‘Tober” now, even if I started a couple weeks early for medical reasons. Unlike the last show, I did not attempt to come up with substitute intoxicants for today, so I think I sounded more focused, if not enthused. I even laid off on the opioids, that I legitimately was prescribed for actual pain, so as not to sound sluggish. On the upside, it’s been five days since having hip replacement surgery, which means five days of nothing to do but sit at home and wallow in my own filth and listen to tunes for consideration for today’s show. It is packed to the gills with killer music and is pretty eclectic. I don’t think there’s anything else to say. Let the music speak for itself.   Click here to check it out: LIC Radio 10/5/2026     Derek Trucks Band “Kam-Ma-Lay”  ( Rubén Blades , Javier Colon, Yonrico Scott, Derek Trucks, Kofi Burbridge, Todd Smallie) Magnolia Street Pub, Spartanburg, SC , 10/5/01 Studio version released on Joyful Noise ...

Jukka Tolonen So I am due to have hip replacement surgery in just over a week, and the reason that I didn’t do the show yesterday was that I had a doctor’s appointment to get medical clearance for the procedure. Evidently, my doctor saw something that he didn’t like too much on my EKG and sent me over to see my cardiologist (who I haven’t seen in far too long). Evidently I need to have something called a “nuclear stress test” on Thursday to make sure I am healthy enough for surgery. Consequently, I have decided to start “sober ‘tober” a little early. So if I seem unenthused and fried, it is because I decided to take some edibles and see if that would work for the broadcast. I don’t remember much except for confusing Max Schmeling with Max Baer.     Click here to check it out: LIC Radio 9/22/2026     Jukka Tolonen Band “Tiger” (Jukka Tolonen) Popstudio Live, Helsinki, FI, 9/22/75 Studio version released on Hysterica   (Love, 1975)   Evidently, today is Natio...

From Mad #4, 1953. Art by Wally Wood. Today was such a treat. I so enjoy the remote shows with Brett. It gives me some leeway to go outside of my normal process (and pawn off some of the work to somebody else). Today, however, I actually got to have him in my “studio” for the first time in almost a decade, which was cool. It was a wonderfully spontaneous show. See, Brett’s visit to LIC was a relatively last-minute thing, and he had little time to construct, revise, and finalize his playlist. As such, his theme was deliberately obvious (oftentimes, the game is for me to figure out how the songs are related to one another), but it was fun to play with, and also a bit of a continuation of a discussion we had on the last show we did together.   One might say the show was “super.” (ducks)   Click here to check it out: LICRadio 9/14/2026     Miles Davis “Right Off” (Miles Davis) Paul's Mall, Boston, MA, 9/14/72 Studio version released on A Tribute to Jack Johnson   (C...
