You Know Who... Feels Like He's Been Stabbed in the Back

I’ve had a lot dropped on me in the last few days. At least there has been some good music to distract me. Seeing Beledo and Percy Jones last night was a proper antidote. I threw some Percy on at the end (with his band, MJ12), and will try to find some Beledo recordings that convey how brilliant he is in a live setting. No coherent theme to today’s show, but good tunes, and that’s all the antidote you need.   Click here to check it out: LIC Radio 4/10/2025     Gary Lucas and Gods and Monsters “King Strong” (Gary Lucas) From The Great Lost Gods and Monsters (Mighty Quinn, 2022) Recorded in 2006     O’Jays “Back Stabbers” (Leon Huff, Gene McFadden, John Whitehead) From Back Stabbers   (Philadelphia International/Epic, 1972)     Angie Stone Angie Stone 1961-2025 “Wish I Didn't Miss You” (Andrea Martin, Ivan Matias, Leon Huff, Gene McFadden, John Whitehead) From Mahogany Soul   (J, 2001)     Nektar “Far Away” (Roye Albrighton) From Man ...

Horace Silver, Milan 1978 Photo by Carlo Verri Still working through the huge amount of vinyl that I (imprudently) bought this month. That includes the record by Jeremy Spencer and The Children, with the “Children” being the Children of God, the notorious cult that Spencer joined. I actually had some qualms about buying that one, as I’d hate to support such a disgusting group that has ruined so many lives. Then again, as the record was used it doesn’t really support them, right?   Click here to check it out: LIC Radio 3/27/2025     Horace Silver Quintet “Liberated Brother” (Weldon Irvine) Jazz Workshop, Boston, MA, 3/27/73 Silver’s studio version released on In Pursuit of the 27th Man   (Blue Note, 1973)     Pokey LaFarge “Underground” (Jimmy Sutton, Pokey LaFarge) From Something In The Water   (Rounder, 2015)     Adrian Belew “Oh Daddy” (Adrian Belew) From Mr. Music Head   (Atlantic, 1989)     Jeremy Spencer and the Children...

You Know Who... And Brett, Too!

Hey, Brett really likes Harry Nilsson Another fun show with my good friend, Brett Warwick. Always a good time, even if we end up talking more than  playing music. Honestly, I think he needs his own show. As to be expected whenever Brett takes the helm, there was obviously some Harry Nilsson. It was also my first exposure to Robert Pollard and Guided by Voices. In addition, and I don’t remember how we got to it, but this ended up being the show when I finally played my infamous Morrissey rant, so I would say that this show is worth listening for that alone. Roberta Flack 1937-2025 Today I paid tribute to the recently deceased Roberta Flack, joked (too soon) about how a pissed off pet cat maybe responsible for the deaths of Gene Hackman and his whole family (bad taste, I know), and explored my love/hate relationship with Journey. Also played some amazing songs by Talking Heads, Joe Jackson, and Edgar Winter’s White Trash.   Click here to check it out: LICRadio 2/27/2025     Rick Wakeman “Anne of Cleves” (Rick Wakeman) BBC Studios, London, UK, 2/27/73 Studio version released on The Six Wives of Henry VIII   (A&M, 1973)     Roberta Flack "I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)" (Michael McDonald, Ed Sanford, Jerry Leiber, Mike Stoller) City Hall, Sheffield, UK, 10/22/84 Originally recorded and released by Michael McDonald on If That’s What It Takes   (Warner Bros., 1982)     Daddy Long Legs “C—ksucker Blues” (Mick Jagger, Keith Richards) Single A-side (Norton, 2010)     The Mynah ...

Jamie Muir 1942-2025 How did it sound out there? Personally, I felt like there were tons of audio issues, which is a shame because there were plenty of good tunes today. We started off by paying tribute to percussionist Jamie Muir (November 30, 1942 – February 17, 2025), known for his work with King Crimson and The Music Improvisation Company, as well as drummer Rick Buckler of The Jam (December 6, 1955 – February 17, 2025). Evidently, Monday was a bad day for players of the skins. We did a side-by-side comparison of Oasis’ “Whatever” and Neil Innes’ “How Sweet to Be an Idiot” to try to get an idea where inspiration ends and plagiarism begins, and then played some really bad Star Trek related stuff. In celebration of Walter Becker’s birthday, there was some ultra-rare Steely Dan stuff towards the end. Overall, worth a listen.
